Earthquake: JMA, Evacuation Bags, and Other Informations

Gara-gara sering gempa di daerahku belakangan ini, jadi penasaran pengen nyari info tentang tas evakuasi yang sering disebut2 di persiapan gempa. Soalnya hingga sekarang, belum pernah nemu info detilnya. Akhirnya setelah browsing, dapet juga info ini. Semoga Allah selalu melindungi kita semua....

Do you have the fixed idea that "emergency goods" are just "special items for emergency" or "stocks?"

Are you not preparing the goods because you do not know how to prepare and do not have the space for them?

Today, we will give you some hints and points on how to prepare for emergency goods.

After an earthquake, your house may be damaged and you may need to evacuate. In this case, you have to bring some minimum items. (The maximum weight for male is 15kg, and 10kg for female. Use a packsack to free your hands.)

Helmet and head towel The road condition during can be poor during evacuation. It is necessary to protect your head. (If you do not have a helmet, try to look for substitution such as cushion, pillow, thick magazine, etc.)
Sport shoes and gloves

Prepare a comfortable, well-sized and light pair of shoes.
Also, you need gloves to protect you hands.

Torch (standby battery) Earthquake may happen at night.
Portable radio (standby battery) To collect correct information.
Cash and valuables

Also prepare some coins.
When there is no electricity supply, you cannot use card-phone with telephone cards.

Underwear and simple clothes

The temperature is low in winter as well as in summer night. (Recently, thermostatic aluminium sheets are available on the market.)

Glasses, acouophone, denture, etc.

It is inconvenient if you lose you daily items.
* In the Southwest Hokkaido Earthquake on 12th July 1993, there were cases that some elderly person could not eat because they did not have the denture.

Prescribed medicine

Not only external medicine and emergency set, you should also prepare the medicine you are taking (such as medicine for high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, atopic diseases, etc.)
It is handy to ask for the same medicine if you have the "medication handbook" from the pharmacy.

* Emergency bag is necessary in evacuation. Put it near the main entrance or corridor, or hand it on the wall.

After an earthquake, the lifeline will be stopped. There will be no water, gas and electricity. You should also bear in mind that it is difficult to purchase food.

Drinking water One person needs 3 litres of drinking water per day.
Food In case there is no water, gas and electricity, you should prepare food that can fulfil the following criteria.
(1) Conservable under room temperature for a long period of time.
(2) No need to be cooked.
(3) Not bulky and can save space.
(4) High calorie and nutrition.
(5) Easy to eat for elderly and children.
Think about the situation of your family. You may need milk powder, disposable diaper, etc.
*

It is necessary to prepare food for earthquake. The food in refrigerator can be also served as emergency food after a disaster.

The student volunteer circle from Tohoku Fukushi University suggests some recipes that can be made by using a rice cooker with "ingredients available in most families" and "simple cooking method." Of course, these recipes can be made also by portable stove.

Many books are published on the topic. Refer to these publications and think with you family.

Wrap film

"Wrap film is for food," but it is not the only use. It can be used in many ways.

  1. It can be a substitution for bandage in cases of "cut" and "burn." After astriction, tie the wound with a clean cloth (such as handkerchief) in stead of bandage. Cover over the burn directly with ice-pack on top.
  2. Wrap dish (or bowl) before meal. After the meal, just remove the wrap and the dish can be used again.

Plastic bags.

Plastic bags from supermarket

During first aid, it is best not to touch the blood of the injured person. Otherwise, it may case a secondary disaster with infection disease. If you do not have plastic bags to cover your hands, use a plastic bag from supermarket.

Rubbish bags.

  1. Open holes for head and arms, and it becomes an alternative for winter jackets and clothes.
  2. A substitution for toilet when the lifeline is stopped. In case there is no water, put a rubbish bag inside the lavatory (make sure it is not damaged) and add newspaper. It becomes a simple toilet for emergency. Remove the bag when finished. Dispose the garbage. In this case, you can use the toilet at home and no need to search for a toilet outside.
  3. When water tank truck arrives, you can carry and store water in a simple vessel made by paper case with double rubbish bags inside.
For cooking and heater Portable stove, charcoal stove, pocket stove.
Sanitary goods Towel, toilet paper, wet tissue, underwear (extra clothes).
First aid kit, menstrual cloth, diaper, etc.
For restoration and rescue Gloves (cotton gloves), bar, jack bar, scoop, etc.
For easy transportation Bike and bicycle.

Change you mind. Think about how to use items around you during a disaster.

However, you do not need to prepare for all the items. Just prepare the items that are necessary according to your age, sex and family make-up.

For earthquake information in Japan, you can check JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency), which provide the data at least 4 minutes after the earthquake happened. It also provides the information about earthquakes around the world.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst...
